I was looking for something completely different when I came across this Gothic corpus website in Belgium. Not only do they have the complete Gothic language corpus of texts, e.g., Wulfila's 4th century translation of parts of the New Testament, and they also have Streitberg's Gotisches Elementarbuch online and as a PDF for download.

And no man putteth new wine into old bottles: else the new wine doth burst the bottles, and the wine is spilled, and the bottles will be marred: but new wine must be put into new bottles.
[Codex Argenteus, Mark. ii.22]
Wow -- thanks! And I'm pleased to report that after not studying Gothic for almost 30 years I recognized the quote before I was halfway through it. (I'd have gotten it quicker if I'd remembered that gg = ng.)
Posted by: language hat on August 2, 2003 11:52 AMI love that they claim Streitberg's "Gotisches Elementarbuch" is easy to find in used book stores. I think I've been to every Antiquariat in Berlin, Marburg, and Munster and have never found a copy. My doctoral advisor had an ancient, faded copy that he kept in a locked drawer -- that's how coveted that thing can be to the right audience.
Thanks for the website pointer, Jim!

Posted by: MM on August 3, 2003 05:15 AMIt is great to see something like this online. I consider myself lucky to have found and purchased a copy of Streiberg's gotische Bibel. If you're looking for hard-to-find academic books in German, I'd like to recommend Zentrales Verzeichnis Antiquarischer Bücher website. I found 9 copies of the Elementarbuch this morning when I searched, all in shops in Germany. The only problem for folks who live here in the States is finding a payment method that works: out of Germany credit cards getting dinged about $US15 per transaction.
